Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama'ah is name of the majority of the population of this country which is also called as Swad-e-Aazam (mainstream Islam). People who subscribe to Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah are commonly called Sunni.
Public is not aware why they are called Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah and what is the Islamic ruling on other islamic sects? From when and how these sects came into existence? What is their status in the history?
What is the clear distinction between Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah and other sects. In every generation, some people got separated from mainstream Islam by starting new beliefs and creating a new sect. What are most famous sects? This article will try to explain about all these points in brief.
Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah in the light of Quran
The powerful religion which the Prophet brought from almighty, Allah made it compulsory on human kind till the day of judgement. This powerful religion was named Islam and clearly announced :
And whoso will desire for a religion other than Islam that shall never be accepted from him and in the next world he shall be among the losers. (3:85)
Almighty sent the Prophet to all humans on earth and he called all the people towards Islam. People who had proper instinct accept this call and people with wretched heart rejected this call.
What is Islam? Its most simple and easy definition is that whatever the Prophet gave us is Islam, the acts which he didnt rejected, is islam and the things from which he stopped is not Islam.
--------------------
Zahirriyah (non-comformist) : founder of this sect was Abu Sulaiman Dawud bin Ali bin Khalaf al-Asbahaani, popularly known as "Zahirriy". Dawud Zahirriy was initially was follower of Imam Shafii but later found his own madhabb which is based on the that they follow literal meaning on Quran and Sunnah. If clear proof is not found in them then they act on Ijm'a but abosulutely reject Qiyass.
Dawwud Zahiri has differed from consensus on some legal issues, like:
1) Talaaq is valid only by these two words : Talaaq and Firaaq.
2) If three talaaqs are pronounced at once, only one will be counted.
3) If someone gives talaaq to his wife in her absence then talaaq will not be valid.
Followers of Dawwud Zahirriy slowly became extremeist so much so that gair muqallids (i.e. non-conformists) termed taqleed of imams as haraam.
Wahabiyah : Muhammed bin Abdul Wahhab Najdi (d 1206H) borned at Ainiyyah, the birth place of Musailimah Kazzab () . there was extremism in his nature, he called all the muslims of his era as Kafirs and claimed that this ummah is involved in disbelief and polythesim from past 600 years. While taking oath of allegiance he would make the person accept that he is kafir and his fore fathers have also died in the state of disbelief.
They demolished the graves of the companions of the Prophet and founded a new religion.Hence Ali Tantawi (d 1358) writes : Towards what Muhammed bin Abdul Wahhab invited people is called wahabiyah generally.
This religion has few features:
1) Praying by the intercession of the Prophet and other prophets is disbelief.
2) Saying Ya RasoolAllah and seeking help from prophets is polythesim.
3) A persons who beliefs that seeking intercession from the Prophet is allowed, is out of fold of islam. It is allowed to kill such person and looting his property is valid.
Ismail Dehalvi (d 1831) was a gair muqallaid. He spreaded the ideology of Ibn Abdul Wahhab Najdi in india. Mirza Hayrat Dehalvi writes: A person who never became sad by any failure and always kept complete faith on almighty Allah. He was beloved shaheed (i.e. Ismail Dehalvi) who made indian muslims drink the pleasant sorbet of mohammadan laws like Abdul Wahhab. (Hayat-e-Tayyabah, P 285)
Hence all the gair muqallids of india subcribed to wahabi ideology and now they call themselves Wahabi. A fanous gair muqallid scholar, Nawab Siddique Hasan Bhopali has written a book for clarification of his creed, which he named as "Tarjuma-e-Wahabiyyah".
Deobandiyyah : Qasim Nanotwi Deobandi laid the foundation of madarsah deoband in 1283. He was student of Rasheed Ahmad Gangohi and was influenced by the ideology of Ismail Dehalvi. So, impact of wahabi creed was imminent in him. Some of the features of deobandiyyah are :
1) All the preferred acts which are done out of love and respect of the Prophet to express his greatness, are all called as bad innovations by them.
2) They consider the salah behind mainstream muslims as invalid.
3) In furooyi matters they follow Hanafi creed but in some matters they are supporters of gair muqallideen. example they pray over dead which is physically not present.
They reject sitting till Hayya alas Salah in Iqamah and similarly they are not in favour of tasweeb after azaan,
Jamat-e-Islami : The founder of Jamat-e-Islami is Abul Aala Maudoodi. After reading his books, the impression one gets that other than almighty Allah and Maudoodi no one is free of faults. Maudoodi spared Allah but from normal Muslim public to prophets, every one is at the target of his criticism. He found mistakes in every ones life and critised them without any fear of the Lord. But, the personality of Maudoodi is free from these defects as he couldnt find any fault in his 70 years of age. The proof of this is that, he never accepted his mistake in whatever he has written. Second proof is that, describe the shortcomings of Prophets to the people associated with Jamat-e-Islami, they wont mind, disrespect the companions of the Prophet, they wont care. Insult revivers and auliyah, they would listen to it, but they will become furious and get ready to debate and fight immediately, if you consider any sentence or even a word of any book of Maudoodi as wrong.
Following are the some statements of Maudoodi on Prophets, the companions and himself:
